Vietnam Airport Transit & Layover Guide 2026: Can You Leave the Airport?
Types of Transit at Vietnam Airports
| Transit Type | Immigration? | Visa Needed? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| International → International (same airport, booked as one ticket) | May be able to stay airside | Depends — check with airline | London → Hanoi → Bangkok on one booking |
| International → International (separate tickets) | Yes — must clear immigration | Yes, if your nationality requires one | Arrive from Seoul, buy new ticket to Bangkok |
| International → Domestic connection | Yes — must clear immigration | Yes, if your nationality requires one | Arrive in SGN, connect to Da Nang |
| Leaving the airport (layover in city) | Yes | Yes, if your nationality requires one | 9-hour layover in Hanoi, want to see Old Quarter |
Visa-Free Travelers: Easy Transit
If your nationality is exempt from Vietnam’s visa requirement (e.g., UK, France, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Russia, and others with 45-day exemptions; or ASEAN neighbors with their own exemptions), transiting is simple — you pass through immigration normally, get your stamp/admission, and connect to your next flight.
If your stay is under 24 hours and you’re just connecting, this is essentially a brief formal entry into Vietnam. You technically “enter” Vietnam on your visa-free status.
Transit Visa for Nationalities That Need a Visa
For nationalities that require a Vietnam visa (e.g., US, Australia, Canada, India), options for transit are:
- Option 1 — Get a regular e-visa: Apply for the standard e-visa ($25–50) before transit. This is the simplest and most reliable option. A single-entry e-visa works for transit purposes.
- Option 2 — Transit visa (SQ category): Vietnam has a transit/quả cảnh visa (category SQ) for up to 30 days. Application process is similar to the e-visa. Cost varies — check evisa.gov.vn for current fees.
- Option 3 — Stay airside on same-ticket connections: If your connecting flight is booked on the same ticket (single PNR) with the same airline or partner airline, the airline may be able to hold you airside to your connecting gate without formal immigration. Not guaranteed — confirm with your specific airline before travel. This is rare and airline-dependent.
Layover Tips by Airport
Noi Bai Airport (HAN) — Hanoi
Hanoi is 45 km from Noi Bai (HAN). Even with a 6-hour layover, you can reach the Old Quarter and back. Grab from airport: ~$15, 45 min. Worth it for an 8+ hour layover. The airport itself has limited food options in T2 international terminal — exit immigration if possible.
Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) — Ho Chi Minh City
SGN is only 8 km from District 1 (Saigon center). A 4-hour layover is enough to go out, eat bun bo or banh mi at a proper restaurant, and return. Grab: ~$5, 20–30 min. T2 international has better food options than HAN if you prefer to stay airside.
Da Nang Airport (DAD)
DAD is 3 km from Da Nang city center — the closest major international airport to its city in Vietnam. A 2-hour layover is enough to go out and come back.
Long layover at HAN or SGN?
Pre-book Fast Track to clear immigration in 5 minutes instead of 60 — more time to explore the city.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on your nationality. If you’re from a visa-exempt country (UK, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Russia, ASEAN nations, and others — check the current list), you can transit through and enter Vietnam without a visa. If your nationality requires a Vietnamese visa, you’ll need one even for transit unless your airline can arrange an airside transfer on the same ticket (rare and not guaranteed). The Vietnam transit visa (SQ category, up to 30 days) is available at evisa.gov.vn as an alternative to the full e-visa.
For Hanoi: 6–8 hours minimum (45-minute airport transfer each way + time in city). For Saigon (HCMC): 4–5 hours minimum (20–30 minute transfer each way). These are tight — add 30–60 minutes buffer for immigration queues on return. Fast Track on the way out saves significant time. We don’t recommend leaving the airport for less than 4 hours total layover.
