Vietnam Visa Guide 2026

Everything you need to know about getting into Vietnam โ€” visa types, who's exempt, application steps, required documents, fees and processing times.

๐Ÿ“… Updated: May 2026 โฑ๏ธ Reading time: ~12 min โœ… Covers: E-visa, VOA, Exemptions

Do You Need a Visa to Enter Vietnam?

Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality and how long you plan to stay. Vietnam's entry rules fall into three categories: visa-exempt countries, e-visa eligible nationalities, and those requiring a traditional visa.

As of 2026, Vietnam has significantly expanded its visa-free agreements and made the e-visa faster and more accessible. The vast majority of international tourists can now enter with either no visa, or a simple e-visa applied for online in under 15 minutes.

โ„น๏ธ
Quick answer: Most Western nationals (USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days, or apply for an e-visa for stays up to 90 days. Check your country in Section 4.

The key rule: you must always have at least 6 months of validity remaining on your passport from your arrival date. This is strictly enforced regardless of visa status.

Vietnam Visa Types Explained

Vietnam offers several types of entry for foreign nationals. Here's a clear breakdown:

๐Ÿ†“
Visa-Free Entry

Citizens of select countries can enter Vietnam without any visa for a set number of days. No application needed.

Validity14โ€“45 days
EntrySingle or Multiple
ProcessingNone needed
FeeFree
๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Visa on Arrival (VOA)

For travelers who cannot get an e-visa. Requires pre-approval letter. Collect your visa stamp at the airport on arrival.

ValidityUp to 90 days
EntrySingle or Multiple
Processing2โ€“5 business days
Fee$25โ€“50 USD
๐Ÿ“ฌ
Embassy Visa

Apply in person at a Vietnamese embassy. Required for long-term stays, work visas, or specific visa categories.

ValidityUp to 12 months
EntrySingle or Multiple
Processing5โ€“15 business days
FeeVaries by country
โš ๏ธ
Important: Visa on Arrival is only available for air travel entries. If entering Vietnam by land or sea, you must have your visa arranged in advance (e-visa or embassy visa).

Vietnam E-Visa โ€” The Easiest Option in 2026

Since 2023, Vietnam's e-visa is available to citizens of all countries and territories worldwide. Valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entries.

โœ…
Good to know: Even if your country has visa exemption for shorter stays (e.g. 45 days), you can still apply for an e-visa to extend your stay to 90 days. A common strategy for longer trips.

Who Should Get the E-Visa?

  • Travelers staying longer than their visa-free period allows
  • Anyone wanting the security of pre-arranged entry approval
  • Travelers entering via land borders (e-visa works at all 33 checkpoints)
  • Those who prefer to have everything sorted before they fly

Official E-Visa Portal

Apply only at: evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. Do not use third-party websites that charge extra fees for the same government form.

โš ๏ธ
Watch out for scam sites. Dozens of unofficial websites copy the government portal's design and charge $50โ€“$100 for e-visas that cost only $25 on the official site. Always look for the .gov.vn domain.

Countries With Visa-Free Access to Vietnam

Vietnam runs two separate systems, and mixing them up is where most guides go wrong. Unilateral exemptions are granted by Vietnam alone through time-limited government resolutions โ€” 23 countries, 45 days. Bilateral exemptions come from treaties between two governments, mostly with neighbours, and the stay length varies by country.

Unilateral Exemptions โ€” 45 Days (23 Countries)

Twelve long-standing countries, valid to 14 March 2028:

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทFrance45d
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งUK45d

Eleven more added by Resolution 229/NQ-CP, valid 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028 โ€” tourism purposes only:

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐSlovakia45d
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎSlovenia45d
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญSwitzerland45d
โš ๏ธ
Bulgaria is the exception people get wrong. Bulgaria appears in Resolution 229, but a later bilateral agreement effective 22 June 2026 governs instead โ€” and it covers diplomatic and official passports only. Bulgarian ordinary passport holders still need an e-visa. Austria is not on either list either, despite what several guides claim.

Bilateral Exemptions โ€” Varies by Treaty

These come from agreements between Vietnam and the country concerned. Note that the stay lengths are shorter and not uniform:

Phu Quoc: 30 days visa-free for every nationality. Fly directly to Phu Quoc island and you enter without a visa regardless of passport โ€” including US, Australian and Canadian citizens. The catch: it only applies if you arrive straight into Phu Quoc, and leaving the island for the mainland requires a normal visa.
โ„น๏ธ
USA, Australia, Canada: These countries do NOT have visa-free access to mainland Vietnam. Citizens apply for an e-visa (USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry) valid up to 90 days. Standard processing is 3โ€“5 business days โ€” apply at least a week before you fly.
โš ๏ธ
These lists are resolutions, not permanent law. Unilateral exemptions run on time-limited government resolutions with expiry dates โ€” the current ones end in March and August 2028. Belarus was removed from the unilateral list in March 2025. Verify before booking if you are travelling near an expiry date.

Visa exemption rules can change. Always verify your country's current status at the official e-visa portal before travel.

Documents You'll Need

Documents required depend on your visa type. Here's what to prepare:

๐Ÿ“‹ E-Visa Documents (All Applicants)
โœ“
Valid passport โ€” at least 6 months of validity remaining from your arrival date in Vietnam
โœ“
Passport photo page scan โ€” clear JPG/PNG scan of the personal data page, under 2MB
โœ“
Portrait photo โ€” recent passport-style photo, white background, face clearly visible, under 2MB
โœ“
Travel dates โ€” planned entry and exit dates, intended entry checkpoint
โœ“
Accommodation address โ€” hotel name or host address for your first night in Vietnam
โœ“
Credit/debit card โ€” Visa or Mastercard to pay the $25 USD government fee
+
Email address โ€” your approved e-visa will be sent here as a PDF to print or show digitally
โš ๏ธ
Photo requirements are strict. Many applications get delayed because of incorrect photo format. Use a plain white background, look straight ahead, no glasses. Photo must be taken within the last 6 months.

How to Apply for Vietnam E-Visa

Applying takes around 10โ€“15 minutes. Here's the exact process:

1
Go to the Official Portal

Visit evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn and click "Apply for e-Visa." Avoid any site without the .gov.vn domain.

2
Fill in Your Personal Information

Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your passport, date of birth, nationality, passport number and expiry date. Any mismatch can cause problems at immigration.

3
Upload Your Documents

Upload your passport photo page scan and portrait photo. Both must be JPG or PNG format and under 2MB. Make sure they're clear and not cropped.

4
Enter Your Travel Details

Select your entry checkpoint (e.g., Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai), enter planned entry/exit dates, and provide your accommodation address.

5
Pay the $25 Government Fee

Pay by Visa or Mastercard. The fee is non-refundable even if your application is rejected โ€” double-check everything before submitting.

6
Wait 3 Business Days

Vietnam's immigration department processes e-visas within 3โ€“5 business days. You'll receive an email with your approved e-visa PDF. Print it or save it to your phone.

7
Arrive & Show Your E-Visa

At Vietnam immigration, present your passport and e-visa (printed or digital). The officer stamps your passport. Welcome to Vietnam! ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ

๐Ÿ’ก
Pro tip: Apply at least 7โ€“10 days before your flight. The 3-business-day window doesn't count weekends or Vietnamese public holidays.

Common Visa Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

โŒ Applying Too Late

The e-visa takes 3โ€“5 business days in normal processing, but allow 7โ€“10 days to be safe. Many travelers apply 1โ€“2 days before flying and face serious problems if there's any delay.

โŒ Using a Scam Website

Dozens of unofficial "Vietnam e-visa" websites charge $50โ€“$150 for a form that costs $25 on the government portal. Always use evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn.

โŒ Name Mismatch With Passport

Your name on the e-visa must match your passport exactly โ€” including middle names. A mismatch can cause you to be denied boarding or delayed at immigration.

โŒ Incorrect Entry Checkpoint

Your e-visa specifies which border checkpoint you'll use. If you land at a different airport, you may be refused entry. Double-check your flights before submitting.

โŒ Passport Too Close to Expiry

Vietnam requires at least 6 months of passport validity from your arrival date. If your passport expires in less than 6 months, renew it before applying.

โŒ Overstaying Your Visa

Overstaying results in fines of 500,000โ€“1,500,000 VND per day and can result in a temporary ban from returning to Vietnam. Always leave on time or apply for an extension beforehand.

๐Ÿ’ก

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Vietnam visa questions.

Yes. You can extend your Vietnam e-visa once for up to 90 additional days by applying through the same government portal. Apply at least 7 days before your current visa expires. Extensions are subject to approval and the same $25 fee applies.

Yes, if you selected "multiple entry" when applying. With a multiple-entry e-visa, you can exit and re-enter Vietnam as many times as you want within the 90-day validity window. If you selected "single entry," you can only enter once.

Vietnam's immigration authority rarely gives a reason for rejection. Common causes include incorrect documents, photo issues, or a flagged passport history. The $25 fee is non-refundable. You can reapply by correcting the issue, or apply through the Vietnamese embassy in your country.

At most airports, showing on your phone screen is accepted. However, we strongly recommend printing a physical copy as backup โ€” some officers or airline check-in staff prefer a printed version.

Yes. The USA does not have a visa exemption agreement with Vietnam as of 2026. US citizens must apply for a Vietnam e-visa ($25 single entry, takes 3โ€“5 business days) for stays up to 90 days. The process is straightforward and fully online.

Yes, but only with a pre-arranged e-visa โ€” not a Visa on Arrival. The VOA is only available at international airports. If crossing from Cambodia, Laos, or China by land, you must have your e-visa or embassy visa ready in advance.

Apply at least 7โ€“10 days before your intended travel date. The standard processing time is 3โ€“5 business days, but this doesn't include weekends or Vietnamese public holidays. Don't leave it to the last minute.
