What Happens If You Overstay Your Vietnam Visa?

📅 July 2026⏱ 2 min read✍️ EntryVN Team
⚡ Quick Answer
Overstaying even one day triggers fines of 500,000–20,000,000 VND ($20–$800 USD) depending on duration, plus possible deportation and re-entry ban. As of 2026 (NĐ 144/2021).

Vietnam takes visa overstays seriously. Every day over your permitted stay is a violation — even one day. You cannot simply board your flight home without processing your departure at an immigration office and paying the fine first.

The Re-Entry Ban

Overstays of 30 days or more can trigger a ban on re-entering Vietnam for 1–5 years. Your name is flagged in immigration systems. Even overstays of 16+ days can result in deportation.

⚠️ Act before expiry. If your plans changed and you need more time, apply for an extension at the immigration office at least 5 days before your visa expires.
Can I just pay the fine at the airport departure gate?
No — serious overstays require paperwork at the immigration office first. Don’t leave this to the last minute on your travel day.
What if I was hospitalized and couldn’t leave?
Medical emergencies can justify a fine waiver. Bring hospital documentation to the immigration office as soon as you’re able.
Will it affect future visa applications?
Yes. A record of overstay often results in rejection on future e-visa applications, even after a ban period ends.
