Common Tourist Scams in Vietnam and How to Avoid Them
Most scams targeting tourists in Vietnam are small-money tricks, not dangerous crimes — rigged taxi meters, inflated market prices, and “broken motorbike” cons are the ones reported most often. A little awareness avoids nearly all of them.
Vietnam is generally a safe destination, and violent crime against tourists is rare. The real risk is getting overcharged or pressured into paying for something you didn’t agree to — usually a few dollars at a time, but it adds up and sours a trip.
Taxi and ride scams
Unlicensed taxis with rigged meters that run fast are commonly reported in tourist areas. Stick to well-known companies like Mai Linh or Vinasun, or use Grab, where the fare is fixed before you get in.
Motorbike “damage” scam
When renting a motorbike, some shops claim you damaged the bike at return time and demand cash on the spot. Photograph every scratch and the odometer before you ride off, and rent from reputable shops your hotel recommends.
Overpriced goods and “free” gifts
In tourist-heavy streets like Hanoi’s Old Quarter, vendors sometimes hand you a “free” item (fruit, incense, a flower) then demand payment once you’re holding it. Politely decline anything offered unsolicited, and always confirm a price before eating at street stalls without a visible menu.
