How Long Does Vietnam Airport Immigration Actually Take?

📅 July 2026⏱ 2 min read✍️ EntryVN Team
⚡ Quick Answer
Anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours. What decides it is how many aircraft land at the same time as yours — not which airport you fly into. Three hours is the worst case, not the average.

Vietnam airport immigration wait times vary enormously. Here’s what to realistically expect based on current traveler reports:

What is on stand when you landWait
Only one or two flights being processed20–40 min
A normal arrival bank — busy, not the worstAbout 1h 30m
Several wide-bodies landing togetherUp to 3 hours
The same three tiers apply at all five international airports, Cam Ranh and Da Nang included. A smaller terminal has fewer counters, so it takes fewer aircraft to fill it — two charter flights arriving together at CXR produces the same three-hour hall as a peak evening at Tan Son Nhat.

When Is It Worst?

Immigration bottlenecks when multiple international flights land within 60 minutes. At SGN, this typically happens around 8–10am (flights from China, Korea, Japan) and 1–3pm. Tet holiday (late Jan/Feb) is historically the busiest period of the year.

Those windows are an example from one airport, not a rule. Da Nang and Cam Ranh reach three hours too — more easily, in fact, because they run fewer counters.

✅ What you can control: Arrive with an e-visa rather than visa on arrival — VOA adds a second counter. Have your pre-arrival QR ready. If a tight connection or small children make a three-hour queue unacceptable, Fast Track clears it in 5–10 minutes whatever else is on the ground.
Does e-visa go faster than VOA?
Yes — e-visa holders use the standard immigration counters. VOA holders must first queue at the landing visa desk (20–45 extra minutes), then queue again at immigration.
Are there automated e-gates for foreigners?
As of 2026, automated e-gates are only for Vietnamese passport holders. International visitors use staffed counters.

Three hours on your feet in a hall holding several planeloads is the situation this page describes. A rechargeable fan that fits in a pocket is a small mercy in a queue you cannot leave.
