Bringing Prescription Medication Into Vietnam

📅 September 2026⏱ 2 min read✍️ EntryVN Team
⚡ Quick Answer
Ordinary medication: bring what your trip needs. Controlled medication is capped by law at 7 days’ supply for narcotics and 10 days’ for psychotropics — and must be declared at customs.

The ceilings come from Decree 54/2017/ND-CP and are far tighter than what most people pack for a month away.

CategoryMax without a licence
Narcotic drugs (opioids)7 days’ supply
Psychotropic drugs10 days’ supply
Drug precursors10 days’ supply

It’s a ceiling, not an entitlement: carry the lesser of those days or what your prescription covers.

⚠️ The classification that counts is Vietnam’s, not your own country’s. A drug unscheduled where you live can sit on a Vietnamese control list. Benzodiazepines and opioids are the two families that catch people out — check the name with the Vietnamese embassy rather than assuming.

What Your Prescription Must Say

A pharmacy label isn’t a prescription. It needs your name and age, the drug name with strength, the quantity or days covered, the dosage, and the doctor’s name, signature and address. Keep the medication in labelled original packaging.

✅ Prescription medicine is exempt from the 100ml liquid rule — but exempt from that is not exempt from declaring. Controlled medication still goes red channel.

Medication & Prescription Travel Case

Keeps tablets in their labelled boxes and your prescription flat in the same place — which is exactly what customs asks to see.

Trip Longer Than 7 or 10 Days?

Two routes, both before you fly. Declare in advance to customs at your arrival airport with your itinerary and a doctor’s letter — customs then decides. Or ask a Vietnamese hospital about supply here.

Not sure which category your medication is in? Send us the list and we check each item against the current rules — written reply within 24 hours.

Can I bring any medication if I have a prescription?
No — that’s the risky assumption. A prescription makes controlled medication lawful up to the day limit. It does not lift the limit.
Does it matter which bag it’s in?
The limit applies to what you bring in, not which bag it travels in. Keep it in your carry-on anyway — a delayed bag isn’t something you can replace at a pharmacy here.

Based on Decree 54/2017/ND-CP. As of 13 September 2026. Ministry of Health lists change — verify a specific drug name before you travel.
