Vietnam VAT Refund: The 2 Million Dong Minimum
⚡ Quick Answer
2 million VND, at one registered shop, on one day. Several receipts from the same shop the same day can be added together. Different shops cannot, and different days cannot.
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 2,000,000 VND per shop per day |
| Invoice age | Within 60 days of departure |
| Condition of goods | Unused, original packaging intact |
| You receive | 85% of the VAT — the bank keeps 15% |
⚠️ Not every shop can do this. Only businesses registered as VAT-refund sellers can issue the combined invoice and refund declaration, and only that document works at the airport. An ordinary receipt cannot be converted afterwards — ask before you pay.
✅ Claim before you check your bags. Customs has to physically see the goods, and the inspection desk sits in the baggage check-in area for exactly that reason. Deadline: 30 minutes before departure. Once the suitcase is on the belt, the claim is over.
One condition catches shoppers twice: goods banned from the aircraft are excluded from the refund. A 2 million dong set of engraved lighters fails the security rule and the tax rule at the same time.
The refund desk is one more stop in a departure that already has three queues.
How the refund works →Can I combine receipts to reach 2 million?
Only from the same shop on the same day. Two shops on one afternoon, or the same shop on two days, do not add up.
Why is it 85% and not the full VAT?
The remaining 15% is the commercial bank’s fee for acting as refund agent. It is built into the scheme rather than charged separately.
Can I wear the item before flying home?
No. Goods must be unused and in their original unopened packaging when customs inspects them. Trying something on once rules out the claim.
