Why travelers get it wrong at customs

Vietnam’s medication rules are stricter than most travelers expect — and they change without much notice.

🚫

Common medications are controlled, not banned

Two families catch people out most often: opioid painkillers and benzodiazepines. Neither is prohibited — but each is limited to a small number of days’ supply, each must be declared at customs, and a prescription from home does not automatically cover you — even with a prescription.

📋

Quantities matter

Narcotic-category medication is limited to 7 days’ supply. Psychotropic medication and precursors are limited to 10 days’. Both must be declared, and you may carry only the lower of that limit or what your prescription states — the limit is a ceiling, not an entitlement.

💉

Injectables have separate rules

Insulin, biologics, and other injectables need documentation that goes beyond a standard doctor’s letter. The format matters.

⚠️

Vapes are confiscated on entry

E-cigarettes and vaping devices are illegal to import into Vietnam. Customs confiscates them at the border — no exceptions, no return.

How it works

Three steps. Done before your flight.

1

Fill in the form

Enter your name, email, flight date, and medication list below. The form opens your email client with everything pre-filled — just hit Send.

2

Pay $10 via PayPal

After sending, the PayPal button appears. $10 flat — no surprise charges. We match your payment to your email automatically.

3

Get your written reply

We research your specific medications against Vietnam’s current rules and reply to your email within 24 hours — usually faster.

What your $10 includes

A written answer you can actually use — not a generic FAQ.

For each medication on your list:

  • Allowed / restricted / prohibited status under current Vietnamese law
  • Whether you need to declare it at customs — and exactly how
  • Quantity limits — the 7-day and 10-day rules
  • Whether a doctor’s letter is needed — and what it must say
  • Special handling for injectables, controlled substances, or high-quantity supplies
  • What to do if a medication is restricted (legal alternatives, consulate guidance)
One thing we cannot do: We give you the information to make an informed decision — we don’t file paperwork with Vietnam’s Ministry of Health on your behalf. For import permits on large medical supplies (NGOs, long-term stays with significant quantities), we’ll tell you exactly which agency to contact.

Why EntryVN

We answer this question dozens of times a week. We know the current rules.

📍

Based in Vietnam

Not a travel blog in another country. We check against current Vietnamese customs and health ministry sources.

🔄

Rules Change — We Track Them

Vietnam updates its controlled substances list periodically. A Google search often returns outdated answers.

✍️

Written, Not Verbal

You get a document. If a customs officer questions you, you have something to show — not just “someone online told me.”

📧

Email-Based

Everything goes through email — your list, our answer, your receipt. Clean paper trail, nothing lost in a chat thread.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t I just Google this?

You can try — but most results are travel blogs written years ago, and Vietnam’s controlled substances list has changed. We check against current Ministry of Health and customs sources, and we account for the specific brand names and quantities you have, not generic drug categories.

What if one of my medications turns out to be prohibited?

We tell you clearly, and we tell you your options: leave it at home, check with the Vietnamese consulate in your country about an import permit, find a locally available equivalent, or bring documentation that makes it legal. We don’t just say “no” and leave you without a path forward.

I have a prescription. Does that make everything fine?

Not automatically. A prescription from your home country doesn’t override Vietnamese import rules. For many medications it helps, but for controlled substances it may not be sufficient without additional paperwork. We’ll tell you exactly what your prescription does and doesn’t cover.

How do I send my medication list?

Fill in the form on this page — it opens your email client with your details pre-filled. Just hit Send. Once sent, the PayPal button appears and you complete payment. No separate email needed.

I’m a long-term resident, not a tourist. Does this apply to me?

Yes — and long-term residents often have more complex situations (larger quantities, regular shipments from overseas, medications not available in Vietnam). We handle those cases too.

What about supplements and vitamins?

Most standard vitamins and supplements are fine. Some high-dose or specialized supplements (particularly those containing controlled plant extracts) can be restricted. Include them in your list and we’ll flag anything that needs attention.

When should I order — how far in advance?

At least 3 days before your flight, so you have time to act on our answer (get a doctor’s letter, adjust your quantities, etc.). We reply within 24 hours, but some situations require a follow-up exchange. Don’t leave it for the airport.
