The short answer first Want to be central with easy access to restaurants and the night market: Duong Dong Town. Want a proper beach with a range of hotels: Long Beach (Bai Truong) — Phu Quoc’s longest and most developed strip. Want the most beautiful, clear-water beach on the island: Bai Sao, though it’s remote. Want total luxury and seclusion: the north island resorts around Ong Lang or Bai Dai. Read on for prices, transport, and honest trade-offs.

Overview: Phu Quoc’s Geography

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island, sitting in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Kien Giang province. It’s about 45 minutes by air from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and receives direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore, and other regional hubs. Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is centrally located on the island, making transfers relatively short regardless of which area you choose.

The island is about 48 km long north to south, and most tourist development is concentrated on the western coast (calmer water, better sunsets) and the southern tip. The east coast is less developed and windier — not suited for swimming.

✅ Visa-free for 30 days: Phu Quoc has a special visa exemption — all nationalities can enter Phu Quoc visa-free for up to 30 days, as long as they arrive directly and stay on the island. If you travel to mainland Vietnam from Phu Quoc, you need a standard visa or e-visa.

🏙️ Duong Dong Town

Most CentralNight Market Access

Duong Dong is Phu Quoc’s main town — the largest settlement on the island, home to the famous night market (Cho Dem Duong Dong), the Dinh Cau night market, the main fishing harbor, and a full range of restaurants and services. It’s not a beach area (the harbor waterfront isn’t for swimming), but it’s the most convenient base for food, transport, and access to all parts of the island.

🏖️ Long Beach (Bai Truong)

Most PopularBest All-Around

Long Beach (Bai Truong) is Phu Quoc’s main beach strip — a 20 km stretch of west-facing sand running from just south of Duong Dong town all the way to the south of the island. It’s the go-to area for most visitors: broad beach, reliable water conditions (especially the northern end, closer to town), and the widest range of hotel options from budget bungalows to large resort chains. The sunsets here are excellent.

🌊 Bai Sao (South Beach)

Most Beautiful WaterRemote & Quiet

Bai Sao, on the southeastern tip of Phu Quoc, is regularly cited as one of Vietnam’s most beautiful beaches — fine white sand, turquoise water, and a relatively uncrowded atmosphere compared to Long Beach. The trade-off is remoteness: it’s 25–30 km from Duong Dong, and there are very few restaurants or services in the immediate area. Most visitors come as a day trip from the north rather than staying here.

✅ Pros

  • The most photogenic beach on the island
  • Much quieter than Long Beach
  • Water is clearer and calmer
  • Excellent for families and honeymooners wanting privacy

⚠️ Cons

  • Very isolated — you need transport for everything
  • Few dining options; resort food only in the evenings
  • Higher taxi costs from/to airport and town

The north of Phu Quoc — particularly Ong Lang Beach and the Bai Dai / Ganh Dau area — has been developed more recently and features some of the island’s most exclusive resorts set amid national park forest. The Vinpearl Safari and Grand World entertainment complex are also in this area. It’s quieter than Long Beach and offers a mix of high-end resorts and eco-lodges, though distances to town are significant.

Getting to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) serves direct flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and several international destinations including Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. The airport is in the center of the island — transfers to most hotels take 10–30 minutes.

1

Clear immigration at PQC

All foreign visitors must complete a pre-arrival declaration at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn before arrival. This has been mandatory at PQC since June 1, 2026. Have your QR code ready to show at the immigration desk.

Important: The Phu Quoc 30-day visa exemption applies to PQC arrivals. You do NOT need an e-visa if visiting Phu Quoc only — but if you plan to travel to mainland Vietnam, get an e-visa first.
2

Transfer to your hotel

Grab is available at PQC but coverage can be patchy to remote areas. Most mid-range and luxury hotels offer airport pick-up — book in advance. Metered taxis (Mai Linh, Vinasun) queue outside arrivals. For Long Beach, expect to pay ~80,000–150,000 VND. For Bai Sao, ~200,000–300,000 VND.

3

Getting around the island

Motorbike rental (~$6–10/day) is the most practical way to explore. Many hotels provide bicycles for local trips. Grab works for shorter journeys but is less reliable in the north and south. A motorbike gives you full freedom to reach all beaches, including Bai Sao and the north coast.

Booking Tips for Phu Quoc

  • Book early for December–February: Phu Quoc’s peak season (dry season, best weather) sees hotels fill up weeks or months in advance. Don’t leave booking until the last minute.
  • Rainy season (June–September) offers deals: Prices drop significantly and the island is less crowded, but afternoon showers are common. Long Beach is calmer in this period; Bai Sao can have stronger waves.
  • Vinpearl area vs. town: The Vinpearl complex and Grand World entertainment area (north island) are great for families but feel like a self-contained resort city — not for those seeking authentic local atmosphere.
  • Ask about boat transfer options: Some north island eco-lodges offer boat access from Duong Dong harbor, which is a nicer arrival experience than the road in wet season.
⚠️ Phu Quoc-only vs. mainland Vietnam: The 30-day visa exemption applies to direct Phu Quoc arrivals only. Once you leave Phu Quoc for the Vietnamese mainland, standard immigration rules apply. If your trip includes Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or Hanoi, you need to apply for an e-visa (evisa.gov.vn) separately before your trip — not just a Phu Quoc arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re flying directly to Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) and staying on the island, all nationalities are exempt from Vietnam’s standard visa requirements for up to 30 days. However, if you’re combining Phu Quoc with mainland Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang), you need a valid e-visa or to qualify for one of Vietnam’s visa-free agreements. Check your nationality’s requirements at evisa.gov.vn.

Bai Sao is widely considered the most beautiful — the water is exceptionally clear and the sand is very fine and white. However, it’s remote and lacks dining options. For a beach you can combine with easy restaurant access, the northern section of Long Beach near Duong Dong is the best practical choice for most visitors.

More so than the Vietnamese mainland. As a popular island destination, prices for accommodation, food, and activities are noticeably higher than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Budget travelers can find guesthouses in Duong Dong for $15–30/night and eat local food cheaply; resort experiences start from around $80–100/night. Snorkeling day trips cost $15–30/person.

A minimum of 4–5 days allows you to explore the main beaches, do a snorkeling boat trip to the An Thoi islands in the south, and experience Duong Dong’s night market properly. 7–10 days is comfortable for exploring the whole island including the north coast and pepper farms. Most visitors spend 5–7 nights.
