⚡ Quick Answer
Vietnam has 11 official public holidays in 2026. Tet (Lunar New Year, late January) is the biggest — expect widespread closures, expensive flights, and packed trains. Book accommodation and transport weeks in advance if your trip overlaps with any major holiday period.

Vietnam’s public holidays affect travelers more than you might expect — not just government offices but restaurants, shops, banks, and even some tourist attractions reduce hours or close entirely. Here’s what you need to know to plan around them.

Vietnam Public Holidays 2026 — Full List

Date(s)HolidayTravel Impact

Jan 28–Feb 3Tet — Lunar New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán)Very High 7-day holiday; major disruption

Apr 30Reunification Day (Ngày Giải Phóng)High Often linked with May 1
May 1International Labour DayHigh Long weekend — beaches fill up
Sep 2National Day (Quốc Khánh)Moderate Domestic travel busy
⚠️ Tet is in a class of its own. From around Jan 25 through Feb 3 (2026), Vietnam essentially shuts down. Millions of Vietnamese return to their hometowns — domestic flights and trains sell out weeks in advance. Many restaurants, small shops, and tour operators close for 5–10 days. Prices for everything spike sharply.

What Closes During Holidays?

  • Government offices and embassies: Closed on all public holidays — including immigration offices and visa services.
  • Banks: Closed, though ATMs remain operational.
  • Local restaurants and shops: Highly variable. Tet closures are near-universal for small businesses.
  • Tourist attractions: Most stay open — but expect larger crowds.
  • Supermarkets and malls: Usually open on all holidays except the first 1–2 days of Tet.

Apr 30 – May 1 Long Weekend

The double holiday of Reunification Day (Apr 30) and Labour Day (May 1) creates one of the busiest domestic travel weekends of the year. Coastal resorts — Phu Quoc, Da Nang, Nha Trang — fill up rapidly. Book accommodation at least 3–4 weeks ahead if your trip falls on this weekend.

✅ Silver lining during Tet: If you’re already in a city, Tet can be a magical experience — streets decorated with peach blossoms and kumquat trees, fireworks at midnight, and a very local atmosphere. Just don’t rely on restaurants being open the first few days.

How Holidays Affect Visa Services

If you need to visit an immigration office during a public holiday period — for a visa extension or other paperwork — expect closures. E-visa applications at evisa.gov.vn can still be submitted online, but processing times may be slower. Plan ahead if your visa situation requires in-person assistance.
