Vietnam Passport Validity Rules: How Much Time Must You Have Left?

📅 July 2026⏱ 2 min read✍️ EntryVN Team
⚡ Quick Answer
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining at the time you enter Vietnam. This applies to all nationalities — visa-free travelers, e-visa holders, and visa on arrival. As of 2026.

The 6-month passport validity rule is one of the most commonly overlooked requirements for entering Vietnam. It does not matter how long your visa is valid — if your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied boarding and/or denied entry.

The Rule at a Glance

Traveler TypePassport Validity Required
E-visa holders≥ 6 months from entry date
Visa-free travelers (all nationalities)≥ 6 months from entry date
Visa on arrival holders≥ 6 months from entry date
Diplomatic / official passport holders≥ 6 months from entry date

Where the 6-Month Rule Actually Gets Enforced

There are two checkpoints where your passport validity is checked — and you can be stopped at either:

  • Airline check-in: Airlines are required to verify passport validity before boarding. If your passport is too short, they will refuse to let you board — even before you reach Vietnam.
  • Vietnam immigration: Officers at the port of entry verify passport validity again. A short passport means denied entry, and you will be put on the next flight back.
⚠️ Don’t count on leniency. Some travelers assume officers will wave them through if they’re only a few days short. Immigration staff do not have discretion on this rule — a passport expiring in less than 6 months is grounds for automatic denial.

Special Situation: Children’s Passports

Children’s passports in many countries are only valid for 5 years (compared to 10 years for adults). When booking a family trip, always check every passport individually — not just the adults’. A child’s passport issued 4 years ago may well be under the 6-month threshold by your travel date.

Simple rule: Add 6 months to today’s date. If your passport expires before that date, renew before traveling.

Does the 6-Month Rule Apply to Vietnam Citizens?

No. Vietnamese citizens traveling on a Vietnamese passport are governed by Vietnamese law (Luật 49/2019/QH14), which does not set a minimum remaining validity for Vietnamese nationals exiting Vietnam. However, the destination country’s entry requirements still apply — always check the rules of where you are going, not just where you are leaving from.

Renewing Your Passport Before the Trip

If your passport will not have 6 months remaining at travel time, renew it before applying for an e-visa. Your e-visa is tied to your passport number — if you renew your passport after getting the visa, you will need to apply for a new e-visa with the updated passport details.

Quick FAQs

My passport expires in exactly 6 months from my arrival date. Is that OK?
It should technically meet the requirement, but cutting it this close is risky. Airlines and immigration systems may count calendar months differently. It is safest to have more than 6 months remaining.
Can I apply for a Vietnam e-visa if my passport has less than 6 months validity?
The e-visa application system at evisa.gov.vn requires your passport to have at least 6 months remaining. Your application may be rejected if the passport is too short.
Does the 6-month rule count from the date I apply for the visa, or the date I enter?
From the date you enter Vietnam (your planned arrival date). The passport must still have 6 months left on that day.
