International Roaming vs Local SIM in Vietnam: Which?
A local SIM or eSIM is almost always cheaper and faster than international roaming in Vietnam — most tourist data plans cost a few dollars for a week of unlimited-ish 4G/5G data.
International roaming rates from home carriers are typically charged per day or per MB and can add up fast — often $5–$15 per day just to stay connected. A local Vietnamese SIM from Viettel, Mobifone, or Vinaphone usually covers a full week or more of heavy data use for a similar price, with far better in-country network performance.
Where to get a local SIM
Carrier counters sit in the arrivals hall at every international airport, plus phone shops in every city. Bring your passport — registration is required by law for all SIM purchases in Vietnam. Counter pricing starts at around $12 for the cheapest 30-day plan, and you reach it after immigration, which means queueing twice.
eSIM is often the easiest option
If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy and activate a Vietnamese carrier plan before you land, skipping both queues entirely. Plans start at $9 for seven days, $15 for thirty days of unlimited data — less than most international travel eSIMs charge for a week.
