Should You Exchange Money at Vietnam Airports?
Only exchange a small amount at the airport — just enough for a taxi and your first meal. Airport rates typically run 2–4% worse than in the city.
Airport currency counters know they have a captive audience, so their exchange rates are consistently less favorable than what you’ll find at city-center gold shops or bank branches. That said, arriving with zero Vietnamese dong isn’t practical either — you’ll need cash for a taxi, water, or a quick snack before you can get to a better rate downtown.
The Smart Middle Ground
Exchange a small amount — enough to cover transport and incidentals for your first few hours — then use an ATM or a proper exchange counter once you’re in the city. As of 2026, the reference rate is roughly 25,000–26,000 VND per USD, but always check the live rate before exchanging.
- Airport rates: typically 2–4% below city rates
- ATM withdrawals: usually 3–5 million VND per transaction (Vietcombank allows up to 10 million)
- ATM fees run 30,000–66,000 VND per withdrawal — Vietcombank and BIDV tend to charge the least
