Something Taken at Security? Your 30 Seconds
⚡ Quick Answer
There is no claim process afterwards. Once you walk away, it is gone. Everything you can do, you have to do standing at the tray — and there are exactly three options.
| Option | When it works |
|---|---|
| 1. Take it back out and check it | If the item is allowed in the hold and bag drop is still open |
| 2. Hand it to someone in Vietnam | If anyone you know is still landside — they post it on later |
| 3. Lose it | Everything else |
⚠️ Option 1 does not exist for some items. A lighter is banned from checked baggage outright, so “put it in the suitcase” is not available. Torch lighters and weapon-shaped souvenirs cannot go either way — for those it is option 2 or option 3.
✅ Which is why the real fix is earlier. Check what you can carry before you buy the souvenir, not while a boarding call is running.
Know what does not make it home before you spend money on it.
Souvenirs That Do Not Fly →Can I claim it back after I get home?
No. Items surrendered at a screening point have no recovery route afterwards, and none at all from overseas. This is different from something left on the plane or in the terminal, which is genuinely lost property.
Will they hold it for my return flight?
No. There is no storage arrangement at screening, and as a departing visitor there is nobody to leave it with.
What if I left it in the terminal instead?
Different situation with a real answer — items left in the terminal are held by immigration, and items left on the aircraft by the airline. Both have storage fees that run with time.
