How Long Is a Vietnam Entry Ban?
⚡ Quick Answer
One to five years, where one is imposed. It becomes possible from an overstay of 30 days or more — and it is discretionary, so two people with the same overstay can get different outcomes.
| Overstay | What becomes possible |
|---|---|
| Under 16 days | Fine only |
| 16–29 days | Fine + deportation |
| 30 days or more | Fine + deportation + 1–5 year ban |
These stack rather than replace one another. A ban does not cancel the fine, and deportation does not cancel the ban.
⚠️ One day over is still a violation. There is no grace period. What changes with length is the size of the consequence, not whether there is one.
✅ A ban ends. It runs for its stated period, after which the bar on entry lifts. Deportation and a ban are separate measures, and neither is a permanent exclusion.
Still inside your dates? An extension applied for in time is ordinary paperwork.
See Extensions →When is the overstay found?
At departure immigration. The officer reads your entry stamp and handles it at the counter — it is not deferred to your next visa application.
Can I apply for a visa while a ban is running?
A ban bars entry for its duration. We cannot verify how applications during that period are handled, so we will not guess — ask a Vietnamese diplomatic mission, who can check your record.
Will I definitely be banned at 30 days?
No. It becomes possible at 30 days, not automatic. Nobody who has not seen your file can tell you the outcome.
Under Article 18 of Decree 144/2021/ND-CP. Deportation and entry bans are discretionary. As of 14 September 2026.
