What Does a Vietnam Entry Stamp Look Like? (And What It Means)
Most travellers glance at their passport stamp and move on. But knowing how to read Vietnam’s entry stamp can save you from costly mistakes, especially around your permitted stay dates.
What the Vietnam Entry Stamp Contains
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Port of entry code | Airport code (e.g., SGN, HAN, DAD) or land border name |
| Date of entry | DD/MM/YYYY format |
| Permitted stay | Number of days OR “until DD/MM/YYYY” |
| Officer code | Immigration officer reference number |
How to Calculate Your Last Day
Your entry date counts as Day 1. If your stamp shows “30 days” and you entered on July 1, your last permitted day is July 30. You must exit by midnight on that day.
Stamp vs. E-Visa Validity
If you entered on an e-visa, your permitted stay is the lesser of:
- The period stamped at immigration, or
- Your e-visa expiry date
These should match, but if they don’t, the stamp takes legal precedence for your in-country stay.
What to Do If the Stamp Looks Wrong
If the date, duration, or port code looks incorrect, do not leave the immigration area. Approach the nearest immigration officer and politely request a correction. It’s far easier to fix at the border than through the Department of Immigration later.
