Travel Insurance for Vietnam: What It Is Actually For
Insurance is not required to enter Vietnam. And the usual reason for buying it — that a hospital bill will ruin you — does not apply here. Vietnamese healthcare is cheap, and the prices are set by law and published.
| Service | Official price | Approx. |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation, top-tier hospital | 42,100–45,900 VND | under $2 |
| Bed per night, highest state rate | 918,800 VND | about $35 |
| Bed per night, private room | 180,000–4,000,000 VND | $7–154 |
Those are regulated ceilings from Circular 21/2023/TT-BYT, not estimates. Medicine and tests are billed on top, but the scale holds.
The Two Things Cash Cannot Solve
1. Medical evacuation. Seriously hurt somewhere remote, or needing to fly home under medical supervision, means an air ambulance. Operators quote roughly $25,000–150,000 depending on distance and aircraft.
2. The motorbike exclusion. Most policies exclude motorbike accidents unless you hold a valid licence for that class. Renting a bike without the right licence and assuming you are covered is the most common insurance mistake made here — and motorbike injuries are the most common serious injury visitors have in Vietnam. Check the wording before you rent.
If you do buy, compare on those two lines alone — the evacuation limit and the motorbike clause. We do not recommend a particular insurer.
Treatment prices are the framework rates in Circular 21/2023/TT-BYT of Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, with on-request room rates effective 15 August 2023, converted at roughly 26,000 VND to the dollar. Evacuation figures are indicative quotes published by air ambulance operators, not official prices. Updated September 2026.
