Vietnam SIM Card Guide 2026: eSIM vs Local SIM, Best Providers
eSIM vs Local Physical SIM: Which is Better?
| Factor | International travel eSIM | Vietnamese carrier SIM or eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A foreign reseller riding Vietnamese networks under a roaming agreement | A plan sold directly on Mobifone, Vinaphone or Viettel |
| Typical 30-day cost | $15–25 and up, often capped | $13–15 arranged ahead; from about $12 at an airport counter |
| Unlimited data | Sold as unlimited, throttled after a hidden cap | Vinaphone plans are genuinely uncapped |
| Setup | App, QR, before departure | eSIM by email before you fly, or physical SIM handed to you on arrival |
| Device requirement | eSIM-capable, unlocked phone only | eSIM or physical — a physical SIM works on any unlocked phone |
| Registration | Handled by the reseller | Registered to your passport, as Vietnamese law requires |
Vietnam’s Main Carriers (2026)
Viettel
Best CoverageVietnam’s largest carrier with the best nationwide coverage, including rural areas, highlands, and smaller towns. 4G in cities; 3G in remote zones. Best choice if you’re traveling beyond the main tourist circuit.
Carrier package prices (what a Viettel shop in town charges):
- MT7 (7 days): ~70,000 VND — 4GB/day
- MT15 (15 days): ~100,000 VND — 5GB/day
- MT30 (30 days): ~170,000 VND — 5GB/day
Vinaphone (VNPT)
Good in CitiesSecond-largest carrier, strong in urban areas and major tourist destinations. Coverage slightly weaker than Viettel in remote areas but perfectly adequate for most tourist itineraries. Prices are competitive.
Carrier package prices (what a Vinaphone shop in town charges):
- 7 days: ~100,000 VND — unlimited data
- 15 days: ~150,000 VND — unlimited data
- 30 days: ~210,000 VND — unlimited data
Vinaphone is the one to take if you want data that does not throttle. Our Vinaphone plans start at $10 →
Vietnamobile
Budget OptionCheapest option but weaker coverage outside major cities. Suitable for travelers staying only in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or Hoi An and not venturing to rural areas. Popular with expats for its affordable unlimited data plans.
Buy at: Vietnamobile stores in major cities (less common at airports).
eSIM Options for Vietnam (2026)
International eSIM providers sell Vietnam data packages that run on Viettel or Vinaphone’s networks under roaming agreements — you are a visitor on the network rather than a subscriber of it. You buy and install through their app before departure. They are convenient, and they are the expensive way to do this.
Here is what the same thirty days costs from each route:
| eSIM Provider | Coverage | 1GB Price (approx) | 30-day 10GB (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Viettel/Vinaphone, roaming | $2–3 | $15–18 for 10GB |
| Holafly | “Unlimited”, throttled after cap | n/a | $19–25 for 7 days |
| Nomad | Viettel, roaming | $2.50–3.50 | $15–20 for 10GB |
| EntryVN — Vinaphone | Direct carrier plan | n/a | $15 for 30 days, unlimited |
| EntryVN — Mobifone | Direct carrier plan | n/a | $13 for 30 days, 6GB/day |
The comparison worth sitting with is the Holafly line against the Vinaphone line. Both are sold as unlimited. One covers seven days and slows down after an undisclosed cap. The other covers thirty days, is genuinely uncapped, and costs less.
We sell the Vietnamese carrier plans directly, which is why they appear in the table. The prices above are ours and are published in full on our shop page — compare them against the app before you buy, not after.
| Plan | Data | Physical SIM | eSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobifone 7-day | 5GB/day | $9 | $11 |
| Vinaphone 7-day | Unlimited | $10 | $12 |
| Viettel 7-day | 5GB/day | $10 | $12 |
| Mobifone 15-day | 6GB/day | $11 | $13 |
| Vinaphone 15-day | Unlimited | $12 | $14 |
| Viettel 15-day | 5GB/day | $12 | $14 |
| Mobifone 30-day | 6GB/day | $13 | $15 |
| Vinaphone 30-day | Unlimited | $15 | $17 |
| Viettel 30-day | 5GB/day | $14 | $16 |
Where to Buy a SIM in Vietnam
Arranged before you fly (no queue)
Order the plan in advance and it is waiting for you: an eSIM sent to your email before departure, so data is live the moment the aircraft doors open, or a physical SIM handed to you in the arrivals hall with registration already sorted. From $9. See plans →
Airport SIM counters
All five international airports have carrier counters in the arrivals hall, and they work — staff usually speak some English, and your passport gets registered properly. Two things to know before you plan around them. Airport counter pricing starts at roughly $12 even for the cheapest plan, which is above what the same plan costs arranged in advance. And you reach the counter after immigration, which can run to three hours when several aircraft land together, then queue again at the counter itself.
Telco stores in the city
Carrier flagship stores have the full plan range and staff who can configure APN settings. Fine if you are already in town and can go a day on hotel WiFi.
Airport WiFi at Vietnamese Airports
All major Vietnamese airports have free WiFi available after clearing customs/immigration. Coverage and speeds vary:
- Tan Son Nhat (SGN): Free WiFi available in arrivals hall — speeds adequate for messaging and maps. Look for “Sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất” or “Free WiFi” networks.
- Noi Bai (HAN): Free WiFi at T2 international terminal. Speeds can be slow during peak hours.
- Da Nang (DAD), Cam Ranh (CXR), Phu Quoc (PQC): Free WiFi available, typically faster than the big hubs.
Airport WiFi is fine for a quick check — but don’t rely on it for booking Grab or navigating in the arrivals hall where signal can drop. Having a SIM or eSIM active before you reach the taxi queue is strongly recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Roaming plans work but are almost always far more expensive than a local SIM. Even the cheapest international roaming plans charge $5–10/day in Vietnam. A Vietnamese carrier plan gives you 30 days of data from $13, with genuinely unlimited plans at $15. The only scenario where roaming makes sense is a very short visit (1–2 days) where buying a SIM isn’t worth the effort.
Vietnam SIM cards (Viettel, Vinaphone) do support international roaming in neighboring countries, but at much higher rates than local data. If you’re combining Vietnam with Cambodia or Thailand on a longer trip, consider a regional eSIM that covers multiple countries — Airalo, Nomad, and Drimsim all offer Southeast Asia regional packages.
4G LTE is available in all cities and most provincial towns. In major cities (Hanoi, HCMC, Da Nang, Hoi An), you’ll typically get 20–50 Mbps on Viettel or Vinaphone — enough for video calls and streaming. 5G is rolling out in urban centers. Remote areas (northern highlands, Mekong Delta islands) may drop to 3G. Overall, Vietnam’s mobile connectivity is excellent for a developing country.
Yes — WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, FaceTime (over WiFi or data), and Zoom all work normally in Vietnam. There’s no VoIP blocking. VPN services generally work too, though some specific VPN providers may be intermittently blocked. Vietnam doesn’t restrict messaging apps the way China does.
