Domestic to International Transfer at Vietnam Airports: What to Do
⚡ Quick Answer
Vietnam’s major airports have separate terminals for domestic and international flights. You will need to clear immigration and security again when connecting from a domestic to an international flight. Allow at least 2.5–3 hours between flights.
Connecting from a domestic flight to an international departure in Vietnam is more involved than a simple terminal change. Here’s what actually happens at each major airport.
The Key Difference: No Sterile Transit
Unlike some international hubs, Vietnam’s airports do not have a sterile transit corridor between domestic and international terminals. This means you must:
- Collect any checked baggage from domestic arrivals
- Exit the domestic terminal
- Walk or take a shuttle to the international terminal
- Check in again for your international flight (and re-check bags)
- Clear passport control and security
Airport-by-Airport Guide
| Airport | Terminals | Transfer Time | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tan Son Nhat (SGN) | T1 = Domestic, T2 = International | Min 2.5 hrs | ~5 min by shuttle/walk |
| Noi Bai (HAN) | T1 = Domestic, T2 = International | Min 2.5 hrs | ~10 min by shuttle |
| Da Nang (DAD) | Single terminal, two areas | Min 2 hrs | Same building |
⚠️ Baggage re-check required: Even if your bags are tagged through to your final destination by the airline, you must still collect them at domestic arrivals and re-check them at the international counter in Vietnam. Airlines cannot baggage-transfer across Vietnamese domestic–international segments in most cases.
Practical Tips
- Book at least 3 hours between your domestic arrival and international departure — Vietnamese domestic flights are frequently delayed
- If your domestic flight is significantly delayed, contact your international airline immediately — they may rebook you
- At Tan Son Nhat: free shuttle runs between T1 and T2 approximately every 20 minutes
- At Noi Bai: free shuttle between T1 and T2; signposted at arrivals level
✅ Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, Bamboo: If both flights are on the same booking reference, ask check-in staff about through-check options — some airlines offer this on partner code-shares, but it is not guaranteed.
